Thirukkural is an ancient Tamil ethical text. This has 1330 couplets set in 133 chapters. It prescribes the duties of rulers the means of earning and conserving wealth besides portraying the intimate love life of the lad and the lass. Thirukkural is acclaimed as a text with universal import. The toughest task in such translation is to render the culture specific parts of the original in a way that the pith of the original message comes out clearly and prominently. That Dr. Natarajan has achieved this difficult task is a tribute to his deep understanding of the text as well as his ability to paraphrase its meaning with consummate felicity.
